Staying Healthy While Traveling

Staying healthy while traveling can be a challenge, but with a little planning and mindful choices, it’s possible. Whether you’re on a business trip or family vacation, here are some simple ways to stay healthy on your adventures:

1. Plan Ahead with Healthy Snacks

  • Traveling may mean long stretches without access to nutritious food, especially at airports or on long drives.
  • Pack portable snacks like nuts, trail mix, protein bars, fruit, veggies, or yogurt. This ensures you’ll have healthy options when hungry. I always pack a cooler with string cheese, cut apples or grapes, carrots or celery, and plenty of water.

2. Stay Hydrated

  • Dehydration can sneak up on you during travel due to changes in climate, long flights, or air travel, and it can affect your energy and overall health. This may be due to the fact that you are out of your normal routine and not actively thinking about drinking fluids.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout your trip. If you’re flying, keep a water bottle with you.

3. Move Your Body

  • Sitting for long periods can lead to stiffness, bloating, and poor circulation.
  • Incorporate movement into your travel routine:
    • Stretch regularly: Do some light stretching during layovers or after long drives to keep muscles loose.
    • Take walking breaks: Explore new places by walking instead of relying on public transport. And try taking the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator when you can.
    • Incorporate workouts: Trying out the hotel gym is a great way to mix things up.  If you don’t have access to a gym, there are a variety of body weight exercises you can do in your hotel room. Getting some resistance bands or a TRX strap for frequent travel can also keep you going with your strength training routine.

4. Make Smart Food Choices

  • Food on the go is often less healthy, especially in airports or tourist areas. Choose foods that make you feel good physically and avoid foods that make you feel sluggish or bloated.
  • Look for meals with lean proteins, healthy fats, and fiber-rich carbs.
  • Avoid deep-fried or heavily processed foods when able.
  • When eating out, try to stick to balanced meals that include vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains. Choose grilled or steamed options over fried ones.

5. Prioritize Sleep

  • Traveling, especially across time zones, can disrupt your sleep schedule. Poor sleep can negatively affect your mood, energy, and immune system. Less than optimal sleep can also affect your food choices, making you more prone to crave sweets and highly processed foods.
  • Stick to a sleep schedule: Try to go to bed and wake up at similar times each day.
  • Bring a comfortable pillow or eye mask from home to keep your sleep routine as consistent as possible.

6. Minimize Stress

  • Traveling can be stressful, which can take a toll on both your mental and physical health.
  • Practice mindfulness or meditation: Even a few minutes of deep breathing or guided meditation can help calm nerves and help you relax.
  •  Plan ahead: Reducing the stress of last-minute packing or flight changes can help keep things calm.
  •  Allow for down time: Don’t over-schedule your trip—balance sightseeing with relaxation.

7. Be Cautious with Alcohol

  • Alcohol can dehydrate you, affect your sleep, and lead to poor food choices.
  • If you’re going to drink, aim for moderation and alternate with water to stay hydrated.
  •  Avoid heavy drinking, especially on travel days or when you’re in unfamiliar places.

8. Avoid Overdoing Caffeine

  • While caffeine can give you a boost, excessive consumption (especially when you’re already tired or jet-lagged) can lead to dehydration, jitters, or disrupted sleep.
  • Limit your caffeine intake to 1-2 cups per day.

9. Stay Mindful of Mental Health

  • Traveling can be overwhelming, especially if you’re away from home or feeling isolated.
  •  Take time for activities that help you unwind, such as reading or spending time outdoors.

The Bottom Line:

Staying healthy while traveling comes down to making mindful choices. By planning ahead, staying hydrated, prioritizing sleep, and incorporating movement into your day, you can maintain your well-being even when you’re on the go. Balancing relaxation with activity, eating nutritious foods, and managing stress will keep you energized and feeling your best during your travels.
